사랑에 대하여 /on Love-Khalil Gibran (The Prophet)

Then said Almitra, " Speak to us of Love."
And he raised his head and looked upon the people,
and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said :

[그러자 알 미트라가 말했다.
"우리에게 사랑에 대하여 말씀하여 주십시오."
그가 얼굴을 들어 사람들을 바라보았을 때 사람들 사이에 침묵이 흘렀다.
그리고 그는 힘찬 목소리로 말하기 시작하였다.]

사랑에 대하여

When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
사랑이 그대를 부르거든 그를 따르라.
비록 그 길이 험하고 힘들지라도.
사랑의 날개가 그대를 감싸거든 그 사랑에 맡기라.
비록 그 날개깃 속에 숨겨진 칼이 그대를 아프게 하더라도,

And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind
lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
사랑이 그대에게 말을 하면 그를 믿으라.
비록 휩쓸고 지나가는 북풍이 정원을 폐허로 만들듯
사랑의 목소리가 그대의 꿈을 산산이 흩어버릴지라도,
사랑은 그대에게 온 세상을 주기도 하고 고통의 십자가를 지우기도 하리니,
사랑이 그대를 성숙시킨 것처럼 사랑은 그대를 가지치기하기도 하리라.

Even as he ascends to your height
and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
사랑은 햇빛 속에 흔들리는
그대의 가장 부드러운 가지를 애무하여
그대를 높이 날게 하기도 하지만,
사랑은 또한 그대의 뿌리로 내려가
그대가 이 세상에 집착했던 모든 것들을 흔들어 놓으리라.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire,
that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
사랑은 옥수수의 다발처럼 그대를 그 자신에게로 거두어들이는 것.
사랑은 그대를 탈곡하듯 두드려
그대가 있는 그대로의 모습으로 나타나게 하는 것.
사랑은 그대를 체로 쳐서
그대의 쓸데없는 껍질로부터
자유롭게 하는 것.
사랑은 그대를 정화시켜 순결하게 하는 것
사랑은 그대가 부드러워질 때까지 그대를 반죽하는 것;
그리하여 사랑은 그대를 사랑의 성스러운 불에 넣어,
그대를 신들의 거룩한 향연을 위한 성스러운 빵이 되게 하리라.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart,
and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
사랑은 이 모든 일들을 그대에게 행하여
그대로 하여금 그대 마음의 비밀을 알게 하고,
그 깨달음으로 그대가 큰 생명의 마음 한 조각이 되게 하리라.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness
and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh,
but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
그러나 만일 그대가 두려움 속에서
오직 " 평화로운 사랑"과 "사랑의 즐거움"만을 찾는다면,
그때는 차라리 그대가 그대의 알몸을 가리고
사랑의 추수 마당으로 나아가는 것이 좋으리라.
그대가 웃어도 웃지 못하고 웃음소리가 전부가 아니며,
울어도 울지 못하며 눈물이 전부가 아닌 계절도 없는 세상으로.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
사랑은 사랑 그 자신 외에는 아무것도 주지 않으며
사랑 그 자신 외에는 아무것도 바라지 않는 것.
사랑은 소유할 수도 소유당할 수도 없는 것
오직 사랑은 사랑만으로 충분한 것을.

When you love you should not say,
"God is in my heart, " but rather, I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love,
if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
그대가 사랑할 때
"신은 내 마음속에 계신다, "라고 말하지 말고,
"나는 신의 마음속에 있다."라고 말하라.
그리고 사랑의 길을 찾을 수 있을 거라고 생각 말라.
그대가 가치 있다면
사랑이 그대를 찾아와
사랑의 길을 가르치리니.

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires,
let these be your desires:
사랑은 스스로를 채우는 것 외에 다른 바람이 없는 것.
그러나 그대가 사랑하면서도 바라는 것을 필요하다면
이런 것들이 그대의 바람이 되게 하라.

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully
To wake at dawn with a winged heart
and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart
and a song of praise upon your lips.
녹아서
밤을 향해 음률에 맞추어 노래하고
흐르는 시냇물처럼 되기를
넘치는 자비(慈悲)로 인한 고통을 알게 되기를
스스로 알게 된
사랑으로 인해
상처받기를
기꺼이
그리고 즐겁게
자신의 십자가를 지고 피 흘리게 되기를.
아침엔 날개 달린 마음으로 일어나
새로운 사랑의 하루를 위해 기도할 수 있기를
한낮에 휴식 시간엔 쉬며 사랑의 기쁨을 명상하기를;
해질 무렵에는
감사하는 마음으로
집으로 돌아오기를;
그리고 그대 마음속에 사랑하는 이들을 위해
기도하고,
그대의 입술로 찬미 노래 부르며 잠들기를
